At Meridian Animal Hospital, we recommend Microchipping all of your pets. Pets are lost and stolen every day. A microchip can help reunite you with your pet. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is usually implanted under the skin between the dog or cat shoulder blade area. We suggest that you have your puppies and kittens microchipped at the time of your pets spay or neuter. The microchip is a permanent pet identification but not a GPS location device. The microchip needs to be read with a scanner. Most veterinarians can scan an animal for a microchip to help a lost pet be reunited with their owners. Microchips can be implanted at any visit with your veterinarian. Young and old pets alike can be implanted with a Microchip.
When you have your pet implanted with a Microchip it is very important that you keep the chip registration up to date. When you move or change your phone number you will need to go to the Microchip web site and update these changes. If the microchip information is not kept up to date it will make it difficult to find out who the pet belongs to. There are many stories of pets being reunited with their owners because they had a microchip.
